» » Impeachment: Nasarawa lawmaker escapes death, car burnt

Barely 24 hours after the embattled governor of Nasarawa State, Umaru Tanko Al-makura boasted that nobody can remove him from office, and urged his loyalists to resist any attempt to impeach him, a member
of the state House of Assembly, Muhammad Muluku Aga (PDP Nasarawa Eggon East) narrowly escaped death, as hoodlums attacked and burnt his car. The incident occurred in the early hours of wednesday in Akurba in Lafia Local Government Area of the state. It was gathered that the hoodlums trailed the lawmaker's driver between Lafia town and Akurba thinking that the lawmaker was inside the vehicle. The driver was said to have left the car on the main road and taken to his heels and when the attackers tried in vain to catch him they came back, ransacked the car and picked some valuable items, before setting it ablaze.

We gathered, those living around the scene of the incident had deserted the area for fear of the unknown while soldiers were seen making some inquiries from the residents who refused to talk to journalists. Muluku Aga, however, could not be reached on phone as he had switched off his handsets.
Also, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security and Special Duties, Muhammad Baba Ibaku, could not be reached on phone as at press time.
However, when contacted, the press secretary to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Ibrahim Tanko, said the driver of the vehicle, Sani Muluku, who is a younger brother of the lawmaker, had left Nasarawa Eggon in the early hours of Wednesday to attend a naming ceremony in Lafia with his friend. He said they were stopped by some hoodlums along Shendam Road Junction, who asked them the whereabouts of their brother, Aga. He said when the duo failed to disclose the lawmaker's whereabouts, the hoodlums gave them thorough beating and set the lawmaker's car ablaze.
In a similar incident, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Ego Maikeffi, was attacked at about 5a.m. while on his way for morning prayers by suspected hoodlums, who had trailed him to his church, but he escaped to the 'C' Division Police Station in Lafia, where his attackers were dispersed with teargas.
